Bingo of the Week: 03/16/10

The Scrabble Bingo of the week returns.

This week's bingo is vavasor. According to OSPD, this is a high-ranking vassal. There are a couple of 8 letter variations, if you have the available extra letter on the board: vavasour and vavassor.

Todays bingo is sraddha.

I got back into the habit that started me on this Bingo of the Week kick today, that being to read through a page a day (or at least as often as possible) of my copy of the OSPD, the official dictionary for Scrabble. This one jumped out at me today. My typical play when I have an "h" in my rack is to get rid of it as quickly as possible, a bad strategy because it usually backfires, but thats me. This is one of my favorite types of bingoes, one that will be sure to have your opponent challenge it. Then not only do you look like a genius, but if you are playing with the additional rules, he or she gets a penalty.

The Bible, whether or not you accept its validity as a religious book, can be the source of several bingos that are perfectly acceptable in the game. I noticed this one while reading a passage from the book of Luke .

denarii: The plural of denarius, a coin used in the ancient Roman empire. According to my Bible, a denarius was the equivalent of a day's wages, so more than one would be quite a bit of money.

Luke 7:40 Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

How many people have had thos peskyHs crop up all in one rack? I usually ditch them pretty fast by spelling "huh" or "hah". Here's one though, that not only plays out the Hs but gets a bingo too.

harumph: an expression noting disdain, protest, or dismissal.

I didn't get a "harumph" out of that guy!
Give the Governor harumph!
Harumph!

ganjahs: to put it bluntly, it's pot, weed, marijuana. It'll give your scrabble mates a turn if you are known to be straight-laced, if you lay that one on the board.

Today's bingo comes from the pre-Columbian tribesman of the ancients.

cazique was a term used for respect to the tribal chiefs.

Today's word is currach. It is an Irish boat. Good word to know when you have been stuck with both the Cs.

Today's bingo is brought to you by the letter "K". Thank's Sesame Street.

koumyss: n. A drink made from camel's milk.

This is a variation spelling. The standard is koumiss or kumis, but I chose this one because the pesky y is used. I often have trouble with Y. I can't say I'd be anxious to try this stuff, but it is a fermented drink, so beggars can't be choosers...

Todays word is

xerarch: (adj.) Originating in a dry habitat.

The letter x is useful at times, but lately I seem to have to settle for the two letter words. I am currently browsing the OSPD, a page a day, randomly chosen. This was one that jumped out at me.

Today's word is jumbuck. Those "J"s and "K"s are hard to play sometimes, and when you couple them with a couple of "U"s, they can be a pain in the butt. But here is a word that can pay off big, especially if you get lucky with a bonus square or two.

Jumbuck is an Austrailian term for a sheep. Most notably, wikipedia references the son Waltzing Mathilda as a source for the word. Its been a long time since I heard that song.

Today's bingo is a little more common, but unless you are a Hebrew linguist, it might not be known to you.

daleths: daleth is the fourth letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Daleths is the plural form of the word.

Bingo of the Week

One of my favorite pasttimes is scrabble and its variations. Maybe because I have been a lifelong reader. I am going to start out with a weekly entry for those of you who are fellow enthusiasts. Each week, tune back in for a new word. Most of these words will be ones that are not readily on the tip of your tongue, but can be highly useful to know if you happen to have the correct set of letters.

zymurgy:n.

Zymurgy is the branch of chemistry that deals with how things are fermented, such as beer. Which is exactly why I chose it as my first entry.
